On behalf of Edenstone Homes, Studio Response commissioned artist Tim Norris to design a play area and amphitheatre for the Woodlands residential development, Dinas Powys. Tim collaborated with Green Play Project who developed the concept design into a reality.
The play area sits in a prominent location within the public open space at the centre of the development. Its central feature is a hill fort, approached by steps or stepping logs that lead up to the timber structure. A wide double slide provides a route down or children can cross the rope bridge to the second tower. The adjacent amphitheatre provides a focus for community events and is an ideal spot for parents to sit and watch their children enjoying the play area.
This artist-led solution for the play area is an example of public art being applied to create something useful, meaningful and site responsive.
Emma Price Co-Director of Studio Response said "the value of play for children's development is very important to us. Children are instinctively creative and curious and we feel that The Woodlands enabled us to deliver a playground that allows them to explore nature, be active and create their own imaginary worlds."
The commission culminated with a visit from pupils from Dinas Powys Primary School who officially opened the play area and planted daffodil bulbs around the Public Open Space.
