Studio Response was appointed by Barratt Homes to curate and manage a series of public artworks for their new Sutton Chase Residential Development in Ogmore-by-Sea, South Wales. Commissioned artist Mark Houghton, whose works combine a geological, topographic, organic and industrial elements, responded to the landscape of Ogmore to make two installations titled Sentinel and New Horizons.
The sculptures, hand-fabricated from corten steel, consider the collision between the passage of time, the sea, and the land, drawing reference from the striations found within the structures created by carboniferous and Triassic sedimentary rocks at Ogmore-by-Sea. Located across two sites, local residents are encouraged to walk between and explore the site, and thus, engage with the local landscapes.
Mark Houghton worked with Art Fab (Nuneaton) on the fabrication of the sculptures.
