Golau Caredig provides affordable independent living accommodation for people over 55 years old in 42 purpose-built one and two-bedroom flats. Individual care and support is provided by ‘in house’ domiciliary care and a tenant support service. The development is close to Barry town centre and benefits from several communal facilities including a restaurant, hairdressers, laundrette and multi-use activity area.
Award-winning architectural glass artist Kate Maestri was commissioned to develop a playful response to the curved glass façade of Golau Caredig. Drawing inspiration from the history and local landscapes of Barry, Maestri created a dramatic abstract design with echoes of the railway lines which once made Barry the biggest coal exporting port in Britain. A visual beacon for Golau Caredig residents and passers-by alike, the design fills the building’s central staircase with colour, as the changing light of day and night filter into the building.
