A Splott Vista
Integrated Art for Cloughmore Health Centre

Artist: Ruth McLees

Client: Apollo Capital Projects

Location: Splott, Cardiff

Services: Strategy development and commissioning

Completed: 2013

As part of the £3m Cloughmore Health Centre development scheme in Splott, Cardiff, Apollo Capital Projects appointed Studio Response to deliver an integrated artwork for patients which would have the dual functional role of providing privacy screening for consultation rooms. Studio Response commissioned Cardiff based artist Ruth McLees.

McLees created A Splott Vista, which takes patients on a visual walk through Splott, moving through both time and space. Windows show glimpses into the past and present of the local area; details and far-off vistas as seen through gaps in the steelworks' fence, or over the roof of a row of terraced houses. Together, they generate a sense of movement through history and location which mirrors the physical movement of the visitor through the space.

Director of Apollo Rob James said “Introducing art into our buildings is not a requirement of funding or planning, however, our aim is to add interest into our schemes and create a healing environment through good use of art, light and colour. I think the combination of DGA’s interior design and Ruth McLees' art provides a fantastic patient experience which is unique to this building”.
